The album perfectly endorses the feelings of Nahmir, as he copes with depression and other issues through his incredible music. From The Inside Out revolves around themes of gang violence in Long Beach, it features clips of TV Interviews and clips associated with gang culture - It's a semantic field of lyrical genius.
It interestingly tells the story of the lives of many gang members all around the world and is meaningful to identify and emphasise the lives that are lived in some communities. While there are hardships, this project proves that no matter where you come from or what is going on in your head, you can make anything happen.
Some of the backbeats are arguably quite simplistic, yet intriguing, this is to give way to some incredible harmonies and pads, layered over the top with spoken vocal breaks to cleverly chop up the rap sections. It seems to take inspiration from many genres, including world music, and traditional aspects. One track has a calming, tranquil whistle style of instrumentation, perfectly balanced by rainforest sounds and the occasional howl vocal effect.
This is proof of how Mikem is willing to experiment with many different musical styles and genres, from the aforementioned World Music styles, to Jazz beats and Nostalgic hip hop, showing his creativity, originality and uniqueness. This is bound to be successful. Just take a listen to the rhythmic, meaningful, heartfelt lyrics take center stage.
Mikem is portrayed as a strong, courageous artist within From The Inside Out, and I must agree, the album truly is perfect.
Mikem's 'audio short film' is something to be proud of, and I think his latest instagram post really gives the true meaning and purpose of why people create music.
