Herbert’s backstory resembles something out of a rock’n’roll movie, full of brushes with superstardom, battles with addiction and imprisonment, and a lifelong habit of challenging preconceptions around race and sexuality. But all of that intrigue pales in comparison to his output as an artist. For over forty years, he has been performing a thrilling blend of blues, jazz, and soul, while maintaining a steady output as an author and playwright. Dubbed a ‘life-long hustler’ by none other than Dee Dee Ramone, Herbert’s work is informed by life experience that others could only dream of. As he enters a new stage of his career, he remains as committed to his music as ever. With new projects expected in 2021 and beyond, Herbert’s story still has a long way to go.
