Docaos - Escolha: Keywords EP
Brazilian band DOCAOS have released their action packed debut EP, titled "Escolha: Keywords"
The 30 minute compilation begins with "Carregue Pedras ou Construa Catedrais" (Load Stones or Build Cathedrals).
Straight from the beginning, it becomes a track that truly roars from the speakers. The power of the vocals, the aweinspiring electric guitar which seem to relentlessly gain momentum and the deep beats of the percussion all melt into one to create a sound of vigour. It's a sound if one of anger, and downright wickedness, and the stamina isn't lost once throughout.
It never gives a moment of downtime, it constantly pulls you in and intrigues you until the end.
The 2nd track is "Right Before Me"
It really is song that fills and overwhelms each of your 5 senses. It will make your heart beat rapidly and your ears ring with its seemingly infinite vitality, all making a hazy, cinematic atmosphere by the time the 4 minutes are up.
The vocals build throughout, with power, depth and confidence.
Perfect for a song heavily influenced by genres from Rock to Metal.
Around half way through, there is some tranquillity, yet it unfolds and gives way to growling, angersome vocals, dancing around the complex riffs.
The 3rd song is titled "O Tamanho do Vazio (Asfixiado)" (The size of the void (suffocated)
Waiting at every beat is a screeching guitar riff, or a powerful drum fill. The band have gained a ferocity that is unbeatable, especially in comparison to a lot of modern music. I can only imagine that this will be even more impactful on the live stage. DOCAOS should get readied up for a summer of mosh pit crowds!
It ends with a fade after a subdued section, leading into "Samba de um Cadeado Só" (One Padlock Samba)
This track takes influence from many different music styles, from the usual Docaos metal, to sections of traditional guitar. It's truly full of creativity and uniqueness.
Featuring Ed Garcia from Vitalism, the soundscape is more varied than we've ever seen before.
It definitely is my favourite track from the EP, with many different musical styles being implemented, it flows from section to section, with different element to the next. Truly fulfills the record, before fading into the distance, leaving you wanting to hear more of what Docaos can create.
It ends dramatically full of distortion and chaos, before turning to the 2nd to last track, titled "The Key Is..."
Turning a little further away to the Heavy Metal, this song starts off with a more lighthearted, calming feel. It does however, still have sections full of instrumentation and complex structured drums.
It could truly become a classic anthem, with the catchy chord progressions and herculean vocals by Victor Carvalho.
You'll be grooving along and tapping your feet for the entire 5 minute track, it brings you on a music adventure, and you get an experience, not just a song.
The finale is "Enredo de Fabiano em Ré Menor" (Fabianos plot in D Minor)
Even though the track is a hefty 7 minutes long, it never fails to keep you interested and eager to hear what's happening. The track has clearly been well thought out, planned, and structured, with harmonies radiating from ear to ear, amongst the chaotic instrumentation, full of depth, intricacy, and complication.
There are vocals, that have a radio, muffled effect to them, truly consummating the aforementioned cinematic vibe, full of imagery. The vocal performance, especially towards the end of the musical section of the track is fast paced, rhythmic and reassuring of the genre. It ends full of imagery, building a connection between Docaos' fans and listeners with the thought involved in the production of this great stepping stone EP for the band.
