Sawyer Presents - Happy Hour
"Sawyer" is a 4 man dive bar band from Philadelphia, PA. While performing Friday night cover songs at a popular Northeast Philadelphia dive bar, "Benny the Bums", they were discovered by the New Jersey based independent record label, Dope Hitz Entertainment.
Now releasing a debut album... titled "Happy Hour"
Beginning with a powerful new offering, the opening track is filled with upbeat, groovy guitar licks that climb and weave through the track.
The signature honey vocals are strong, this release features a stronger sense of catharsis - especially in vocal performance and lyrical content.
Bluesy and melancholic in sound, yet beautifully empowering in its instrumentation and meaningful vocals, this album is one of self discovery and reflection.
It could have been easy for the band to fall into full pastiche here. Instead, they succeed in combining the band's own personality with more the typical confections of the genre, resulting in songs that feel familiar whilst managing to stand out against similar offerings, with a unique and original sound.
There's an almost country and western vibe on offer in some of the tracks, one that never quite boils over to full blown dust caked cowboy blues, but still has senses of these genres that uphold the aforementioned unique sound.
Listening to this album, we're transported to a booth in some backstreet bar on a rainy evening, with Sawyer playing up on stage.
They manage to employ an impressive array of instrumental and vocal styles to create a certain 'dream sequence' quality to the piece.
By blending genres that could be viewed by some as dated, Sawyer give us a fresh take on some classic sounds with this 20+ minute album. If you're new to this type of music, the tunes will take you by surprise, intriguing you and opening your world of music.
The catchy and reminiscent piano accompaniment on some of the tracks add a definite nod to some influences of that era when bluesy music was the "in thing"
Melodies layered with gravelly vocals, a lyrical and reflective tone adds to the depth and detail of the album.
The band really take a brave risk at attempting to reignite the bluesy spark of the past. And fortunately they've done an incredible job in sparking many different genre joys in me. And I'm sure this has the potential to reignite the groove all across the world.
